ABOUT

As an artist, my work develops into a progression of evolving conversations. Each series of work adapts to help illustrate my concepts and ideas. I employ humor and wit as a means of subverting American archetypes of masculinity and heroism.

Currently my evolving American themed sequence of paintings, take a bold and isolated departure to my previous series. Prior work included graphite and oil paintings designed directly from Robert Rauschenberg drawings, paintings and combines. Spot color was used to highlight tiny comical soldiers jumping around in a vast wash of sepia tones avoiding the bright graphic yellow steams spraying from gray dripping graphite tanks. While dissecting Rauschenberg's content I began to recognize that many of the themes he explored are as relevant today as they were when the work was conceived, political unrest, race, the pervasive nature of technology, corporate influence on the public sphere, and entertainment to name a few. My current collection of work focuses on Midwest cultural icons such as cowboys, football players, and their female counterparts. Fabled American protagonist propagated in both history books and pop culture alike.

Each work in this series represents in one way or another the fading potency of myth, and the transparency of nationalism once it is reduced to a commodity. Together the works create a skewed portrait of a nation that is itself in an awkward stage of adolescence.
