This is a painting based on a sweat lodge experience I had while living out of my car in the Southwest. Here I'm depicted as a bearded woman giving birth to myself in the desert as a 3 headed vulture awaits to see if I will be a still born.
This was actually staged in southern Washington's Ape Caves with 8 of my closest friends. One of the best adventures I could ever ask for. Had to sneak a studios worth of art into the cave while my models posed nude for hours while I got the lighting just right. Guests to the cave that day had one hell of a treat when they stumbled upon our set up. I remember parents and kids alike having a WTF look plastered on their collective faces while walking by. It was amazing.
The title comes from the amount of time an artist spends in the studio or away from loved ones. The work in the background are appropriations of Picasso paintings and sculptures. Here I covered myself in wet clay and dressed up as a DeKooning inspired woman character.
